Your nervous system is constantly responding to your environment, even when you're not aware of it. Many of us go through life on autopilot, reacting to stress, challenges, and emotions without pausing to understand what's really happening beneath the surface.
The difference between a reaction and a response is awareness. When we're in a reactive state, our nervous system is in fight-flight-freeze mode, flooding our body with stress hormones and limiting our access to the wise, thoughtful part of our brain. A response, on the other hand, comes from a place of calm awareness and intention.
Understanding the Window of Tolerance
Each of us has a "window of tolerance"—a zone where our nervous system is in a calm, organized state. Within this window, we can think clearly, connect with others, and handle challenges effectively. When we move outside this window—either hyperaroused (anxious, overwhelmed) or hypoaroused (numb, shut down)—our thinking becomes less flexible and our emotions more reactive.
The good news? You can train your nervous system to expand this window.
Practical Strategies for Nervous System Regulation
1. Name It to Tame It When you notice you're getting triggered, take a moment to name what you're feeling. Simply identifying the emotion engages your prefrontal cortex and calms your amygdala. Instead of "I'm losing it," try "I'm noticing anxiety rising in my chest."
2. Use Your Breath Your breath is one of the few automatic nervous system functions you can consciously control. A simple 4-7-8 breathing pattern (inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7, exhale for 8) can shift you from stress to calm within minutes.
3. Connect with Your Body When you're feeling ungrounded, engage your senses. Feel your feet on the floor, notice five things you can see, touch something with texture. These grounding techniques bring you back to the present moment.
4. Build Safety Through Routine Predictability helps your nervous system feel safe. Consistent morning routines, regular exercise, and time in nature all signal safety to your system.
The Role of Coaching
In our work together, we explore what triggers your nervous system and develop personalized strategies to help you stay in your window of tolerance. This isn't about eliminating stress—it's about responding to stress in ways that serve you better.
Real change is possible. It requires awareness, practice, and patience with yourself. Are you ready to develop a deeper understanding of your nervous system?
