Have you ever noticed that you carry stress in your body? Maybe it's tension in your shoulders, a tight jaw, or a knot in your stomach. Your body is incredibly wise—it holds onto stress and trauma that your mind might not even consciously remember.

Traditional talk therapy is valuable, but it only works with the conscious mind. Somatic work—approaches that engage the body directly—can access and release stress that lives below conscious awareness.

What Is Somatic Therapy?

Somatic comes from the Greek word "soma," meaning body. Somatic therapy recognizes that our experiences are stored in our bodies, not just our minds. When we experience stress or trauma, our nervous system records it physically. This is why you might feel anxious without knowing why, or why a certain smell or sound can trigger a stress response.

By working directly with the body, we can:

  • Release trapped emotional energy
  • Restore healthy nervous system function
  • Rebuild a sense of safety in your physical self
  • Access deeper healing than words alone can provide

Practical Somatic Techniques

Pendulation This technique involves moving your attention between two states—comfort and discomfort. You might feel tension in your neck, then shift your focus to your feet where you feel grounded. This teaches your nervous system that you can move between different states, building resilience.

Tracking Slow, mindful attention to physical sensations helps you develop what we call "interoception"—the ability to sense what's happening inside your body. This awareness is foundational to nervous system regulation.

Shaking and Tremoring Animals naturally shake after stress to discharge nervous system activation. Humans often suppress this natural response. Gentle, intentional movement and tremoring can help your body complete the stress cycle.

Boundary Setting in Your Body We often experience boundary violations as physical restrictions. Somatic work includes practicing physical boundaries—saying "no" to unwanted touch, feeling the strength in your body, reclaiming physical space.

Why Somatic Work Matters

Many people come to coaching because they've tried everything else. They've talked through their issues, they understand them intellectually, but the stress response persists. This is because the stress is held in the nervous system and body.

Somatic tools work because they meet your body where it is. They don't require you to analyze or intellectualize. You simply notice what's happening and let your body do the healing it knows how to do.

Getting Started

If you're curious about somatic approaches, we can explore them together in your coaching sessions. This work is profound and deeply individual—what works for one person may differ for another.

Real healing happens when we engage the whole person: mind, body, and nervous system working together.
