Have you ever found yourself repeating the same frustrating cycle — whether it's in relationships, at work, or in your personal goals? You make a plan, feel motivated, take a few steps forward… then somehow end up right back where you started?
You're not alone. And more importantly, you're not broken.
What Are Patterns?
Patterns are recurring sequences of thought, emotion, and behavior that operate largely outside your conscious awareness. They're the default settings your brain and body have developed over time based on your experiences, beliefs, and the way your nervous system has learned to process information.
Think of it this way: your brain is constantly looking for shortcuts. Every experience you have gets filed away, and when a similar situation arises, your brain pulls up the old file and runs the same program. This is incredibly efficient for things like driving a car or cooking a meal — but it becomes problematic when the "program" involves self-sabotaging behaviors.
The Familiarity Trap
Here's something that surprises many of my clients: what feels like a "fear of success" is often actually a familiarity with failure. Your brain doesn't necessarily prefer failure — it prefers what's familiar. And if your pattern has been to repeat the same ineffective behaviors, that pattern becomes your comfort zone.
As frustrating as feeling stuck or stagnant can be, it can also be a form of comfort. The known, even when it's painful, feels safer than the unknown.
How Patterns Form
Patterns attach to both conscious and non-conscious beliefs. You might consciously believe "I deserve success" while holding a non-conscious belief that says "people like me don't get ahead." These conflicting beliefs create an internal tug-of-war that manifests as:
- Starting projects with enthusiasm but never finishing them
- Self-sabotaging right before a breakthrough
- Choosing relationships that repeat old dynamics
- Procrastinating on things that matter most to you
- Feeling anxious or stuck without understanding why
The First Step: Recognition
Your ability to recognize your patterns is the key to breaking free. At Connection Point Coaching, we focus on energy management — understanding how your brain and body interact to record and replay information.
By gaining insight into the beliefs and behaviors held within the body and mind, you begin to understand why you act and perform in certain ways. This insight allows you to take more conscious action to disrupt limiting and energy-wasting patterns.
What You Can Do Right Now
Start paying attention. The next time you feel stuck, frustrated, or find yourself repeating an old behavior, pause and ask:
- What just happened? (The trigger)
- What am I feeling in my body? (The physical response)
- What story am I telling myself? (The belief)
- What did I do? (The behavior)
- Is this familiar? (The pattern)
Simply becoming aware of the cycle is half the battle. You cannot direct change toward something you do not perceive.
